The short answer

Usage rights define where, how long and in what form a brand may use a creator's content.

What does usage rights mean?

Usage rights are the permissions attached to creator content. A deal can limit use to the brand's organic social channels or expand it to paid ads, websites, retailer pages, email, print, whitelisting or edits. A clear agreement should state the channels, territory, duration, editing permission, raw footage and whether renewal requires another payment.

Creator example

A 30-day paid social license is narrower than perpetual, worldwide use across a brand's ads, website and retail pages.

Questions creators ask

Are usage rights included in a creator fee?

They can be, but the scope should be explicit. Confirm the permitted channels, duration, territory, edits and any paid-media rights before accepting.
